On July 19th and 20th, 2014 WASSOOKEAG RETRIEVERS served as test headquarters for the Penobscot Hunting Retriever Club’s annual AKC Hunt Test.\u00a0 Master, Senior and Junior stakes were held on properties around Dixmont.\u00a0 The weather was beautidul all weekend and a good time was had by all.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

On October 5th, WASSOOKEAG RETRIEVERS hosted the Penobscot Hunting Retriever Club’s Working Certificate Tests with Retrievers at all levels participating.\u00a0 The day also included the club’s 3rd annual PEE WEE stakes where young puppies also had the opportunity to strut their stuff and earn a ribbon.\u00a0\u00a0 The day concluded with a tailgate party and awards ceremony.\u00a0 For more information about the Penobscot Hunting Retriever Club, visit their website at <\/span>www.phrc.net<\/span><\/a>.

WASSOOKEAG RETRIEVERS attended the Merrymeeting Bay Chapter of\u00a0 Ducks Unlimited’s\u00a0 annual Waterfowl Hunters Party on Saturday, August 17th.\u00a0 It was held at a new location this year – The Gardiner Sportsman’s Club.\u00a0 What a great spot!\u00a0 This fun,\u00a0 family-friendly event was well attended and the perfect Maine summer weather we had was icing on the cake.\u00a0 WASSOOKEAG had a small information booth set up and Dave helped out with the retriever competition.\u00a0 Other event highlights included competitions in duck calling\u00a0 for both adults and kids, decoy carving and best duck boat rig, a <\/span>big raffle and a cookout!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On April 11th, <\/span>Wassookeag Retrievers <\/span><\/strong><\/span>was featured in The Weekly –
\n<\/span> a Bangor Daily News publication – in an article written by Brian Swartz.\u00a0 We received
\n<\/span> a lot of positive attention following the write-up from old friends and new.\u00a0 We even received an impromptu visit from Senator Susan Collins and her husband, Tom Daffron the next day.\u00a0 As dog lovers themselves, they saw the article and were intrigued by our
\n<\/span> Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Autumn has arrived at WASSOOKEAG and the hectic pace of Summer is beginning to subside.\u00a0 We are looking forward to our favorite season, getting in some hunting with our dogs and preparing for Winter.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CONGRATULATIONS! <\/span><\/strong>to owner\/handler Molly Billings and her
\n<\/span> Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever pup, Wassookeag’s Zoe Elizabeth for titling in Rally Novice at the Vacationland Dog Club trials in Scarborough on May 22nd and also for earning a leg toward Zoe’s Companion Dog (CD) title.\u00a0 Zoe is a Wassookeag pup from the
\n<\/span> Drew X Annie litter.\u00a0 Wassookeag Retrievers is proud of Zoe and her young trainer, Molly, for their most recent accomplishments!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Wassookeag’s Rebecca WC, CGC<\/span><\/strong> headed to southern Maine in April for another catalog photo shoot\u00a0 – this time for the “Holiday” season editions of Maine’s famous outdoor gear and apparel store.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Wassookeag’s Rebecca WC, CGC <\/span><\/strong>was chosen to participate in a professional photo shoot for a well known Maine based outdoor gear and apparel company on August 15th.\u00a0 The shoot took place on a beautiful private beach in southern Maine and will appear in an upcoming Spring Kids catalog.\u00a0 Rebecca enjoyed the attention and especially loved taking a nice long swim at the end of the session.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

WASSOOKEAG RETRIEVERS <\/span><\/strong>had their annual state inspection done on August 4th with another 100% satisfactory rating in every category.\u00a0 We are proud of our fully licensed professional Retriever training, breeding and boarding kennel and of the 100% positive ratings it has received in every single inspection we’ve ever had from the state of Maine, the town of Dixmont as well as the American Kennel Club over the years. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

April 8th was a landmark for WASSOOKEAG as we traveled to Boston to pick up our new addition – an 8-week old field-bred Golden Retriever named RUSH who flew in from Wisconsin.\u00a0 It was no surprise that he came off the plane ready and raring to go!\u00a0 RUSH was bred by
\n<\/span> Mickey Strandberg of MIOAK’S Kennels in Dousman.\u00a0 He’s in training here for hunt tests and derby stakes and will become one of Sue’s personal gun dogs as well.\u00a0 We are looking forward to a lot of fun with this
\n<\/span> bold and feisty little fellow!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span> WASSOOKEAG RECORD <\/span><\/strong>was set on March 15th (Dave’s birthday) when Chloe delivered <\/span>11<\/span><\/strong> beautiful, chunky, chocolate pups!\u00a0 All 11 puppies are healthy, active, and content as Chloe keeps them well fed and happy.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas are always a lot of fun around WASSOOKEAG and this year was no exception.\u00a0 We love hearing from so many of our puppy families from over the years and the pictures and updates are always appreciated!\u00a0 This year we were surprised to find in the mail a beautiful 2009 calendar called\u00a0 DOG DAYS OF GOLF sponsored by LebanonTurf as a supplement to Golfdom Magazine.\u00a0 The cover features <\/span>Wassookeag’s Duke<\/span><\/strong> a Hilton X Chloe “pup”\u00a0 and he is also pictured on every page with his buddy, Bella.\u00a0 Duke is owned and loved by the Hand family who operate the Bucksport Golf Course.\u00a0 Duke was acquired in the winter of 2007 to chase the geese off the golf course and apparently he is doing a fabulous job!\u00a0 Duke is up for the Dog Of The Year contest at the Golf Industry Show to be held in New Orleans in February!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sue attended the Pawcatuck River Labrador Retriever Club specialty show in Stonington, CT on September 18th where <\/span>
\n<\/b> Can Ch Pinehaven Wassookeag Filson, WC, CGC –\u00a0 “Filson”<\/span><\/strong>
\n<\/span> won the Open Yellow Class.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On Saturday, September 6th, Dave and Sue traveled to Boothbay Harbor with the <\/span>Filson X Bertha pups<\/span><\/strong> where the puppies participated in a photo shoot for a major outdoor clothing and recreation equipment company.\u00a0 Their photos will be featured in the upcoming 2009 Summer Home catalog and will have world-wide distribution!\u00a0 The photo shoot was a lot of fun and the pups were surprisingly cooperative throughout the day!\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

CONGRATULATIONS!!!<\/strong><\/span> to <\/span>Wassookeag’s Chasin The Wind, SH, WCX, CGC<\/span><\/strong> for completing his <\/span>AKC SENIOR HUNTER<\/span><\/strong><\/span> title with Dave at the Penobscot Hunting Retriever Club tests on August 24th, 2008.
\n<\/span> Chase will now be participating in AKC Master level hunt tests with Dave.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dave<\/span> assisted at the Penobscot Valley Kennel Club booth accompanied by NSDTR <\/span>Wassookeag’s Little Sure Shot – “ANNIE”<\/span><\/strong><\/span> at the
\n<\/span> Bangor Dog Days event on August 16th.\u00a0 Annie enjoyed the morning greeting visitors to the club booth while Dave answered questions about Tollers and training Retrievers.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Wassookeag’s Little Sure Shot – “ANNIE” <\/span><\/strong>earned a PHRC Working Certificate title on July 19th.\u00a0 The only <\/span>Toller<\/span><\/strong> among an entry of 28, Annie completed the test with ease and at only 35 pounds – it’s safe to say she was the smallest qualifier that day!\u00a0 Congratulations also to Jake, Dutch and Baldrick on their titles and also to <\/span>“CHASE”<\/span><\/strong> who was test dog in the Intermediate and Excellent level tests handled by Dave.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Skyfire Wassookeag Boathouse Brown<\/span><\/strong> turned 1 year old on July 17th.\u00a0 Thank you to all the breeder judges who recognized Brew’s quality in the puppy classes at the LRCP, LRCPV, and the LRCGB Specialty shows.
\n<\/span> Brew just got his OFA prelims done and they came back
\n<\/span> OFA EXCELLENT Hips, Elbows clear.\u00a0 A CERF was done 7\/13\/08 and he is OptGen Clear\/Normal by parentage.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

WASSOOKEAG had two dog’s entered at the
\n<\/span> Penobscot Hunting Retriever Club’s AKC hunt test on July 6th.\u00a0 Congratulations to <\/span>Wassookeag’s Chasin’ The Wind, JH, WCX<\/span><\/strong> for passing his third wing toward his <\/span>Senior<\/span><\/strong> Hunter <\/span><\/strong>title and to <\/span><\/span>
\n<\/b> Wassookeag Jade<\/span><\/strong><\/span> for qualifying at the Junior stake making her half-way to her title.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Both dogs were handled by Dave.<\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n Dave traveled to Mexico, New York on June 27th to attend a <\/span>Retriever handling drills seminar<\/span><\/strong> given by Carol Cassity, author of the excellent training manual, “Building a Retriever – Drills and More”\u00a0 This seminar was sponsored by the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Club-USA.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On June 13th at the <\/span>Labrador Retriever Club of Greater Boston<\/span><\/strong><\/span> Specialty in Chelmsford, MA, Brew placed in the 9-12 month
\n<\/span> sweepstakes class handled by Sue.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In May it was off to Westfield, MA to the <\/span>Labrador Retriever Club of Pioneer Valley<\/span><\/strong> where <\/span>Brew<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>Filson<\/span><\/strong> were in the ribbons again.\u00a0 <\/span>Brew<\/span><\/strong> won the 9-12 month Sweeps class and placed in the regular class and <\/span>Filson<\/span><\/strong> placed well in the Open Yellow class.<\/span><\/p>\n

In April, Sue traveled to Frederick, Maryland once again for the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac Specialty.\u00a0 This is the largest specialty show in the world with over 1600 Labrador entries.\u00a0 The “boys” from Wassookeag faired very well at the show with <\/span>“Filson” – (Can Ch Pinehaven Wassookeag Filson, WC) <\/span><\/strong>winning second place in his class and our new\u00a0 puppy <\/span>“Brew” –\u00a0 Skyfire Wassookeag Boathouse Brown <\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0WON the 6 – 9 month old Chocolate Puppy Dog Sweeps Class and placed 4th in his regular class.\u00a0 This was Brew’s first trip to a dog show and he thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience!
\n<\/span> A special thank you goes to Filson’s breeder, <\/span>Linda Wages, <\/span><\/strong>of<\/span> Pinehaven Labradors<\/span><\/strong> in South Carolina and to Brew’s breeder, <\/span>Stephanie Harris,<\/span><\/strong> of <\/span>Skyfire Labradors<\/span><\/strong><\/span> in Washington state for sending these wonderful boys to Wassookeag.\u00a0 Linda and Stephanie were both at the specialty as well!

Dave just returned home from a quick trip to Iowa to pick up our new <\/span>
\n<\/b> Ainley 8-dog trailer<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 With all the bells and whistles, our new training trailer has roomy, well ventilated and insulated space for the dogs to travel in style and safety with tons of closets and specialized compartments for all of our training equipment that we use on a daily basis.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On Saturday, November 3rd, Dave & Sue attended the third annual <\/span>
\n<\/b> Pet Expo<\/span><\/strong> hosted by the <\/span>Tri-County Obedience Club<\/span><\/strong><\/span> in Wilton, ME.\u00a0 Wassookeag Retrievers participated with our Labradors and Tollers on “Meet The Breeds Boulevard” and talked to folks about our training programs.\u00a0 Wassookeag representatives included
\n<\/span> Labradors – <\/span>Archie, Cybill & Brew; <\/span><\/strong>and Tollers<\/span> – Gabby and Pumpkin<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n<\/span> all of whom enjoyed greeting folks at the show and were good little ambassadors for their respective breeds.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dave & Sue got a chance to travel together to the <\/span>
\n<\/b> Susquehanna Retriever Club<\/span><\/strong> Hunt Tests in Elkton, MD on October 27th and 28th while our daughter, Laurie, held down the fort here at WASSOOKEAG.\u00a0 We had a great time!\u00a0 Dave finished up two hunting titles on dogs and our newest addition, <\/span>Wassookeag Jade, <\/span><\/strong>passed her first hunt test, handled by Sue.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/b> Blindfaith’s Indianola Jones (INDY)<\/span><\/strong> for passing his <\/span><\/span>
\n<\/b> Working Certificate Intermediate (WCI)<\/span><\/strong> test on October 14th at the Penobscot Hunting Retriever Club’s WC\/I X tests held in Maxfield, ME.\u00a0\u00a0 Also, hugs and congrats to <\/span>Wassookeag’s Rebecca<\/span><\/strong> for passing her <\/span><\/span>
\n<\/b> Working Certificate (WC)<\/span><\/strong> test the same day.\u00a0 At just 9 months of age, Rebecca was the youngest dog entered at the tests.\u00a0 Both passed with flying colors!\u00a0 (Indy was the youngest dog entered in any of the upper level tests).\u00a0 Indy and Rebecca were handled by Dave.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sue took three dogs (<\/span>Filson, Archie<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>Smudge<\/span><\/strong>) to the Paukatuck River Labrador Retriever Club specialty in North Stonington, CT\u00a0 on September 20th and 21st coming home with two blue ribbons.\u00a0 Immediately upon return, Dave headed to the Labrador Retriever Club of Greater Boston hunt tests in Woodstock, CT on September 22nd and 23rd finishing Hunt Test titles on <\/span>Indy<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>River<\/span><\/strong>, picking up a third leg toward <\/span>Rose<\/span><\/strong>‘s JH and another leg for <\/span>Chase<\/span><\/strong> toward his <\/span>Senior Hunter<\/span><\/strong> title.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dave traveled to Long Island, NY with five dogs for the Long Island Retriever Field Trial Club tests on September 8th & 9th.\u00a0 Wassookeag dogs, <\/span>INDY<\/span><\/strong> went 2 for 2 toward his JH title and <\/span>CHASE<\/span><\/strong> earned a leg toward his Senior Hunter title.\u00a0 The three client dogs, Rose, Duke and Moxie all did well, too and came home with ribbons toward their AKC titles!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Wassookeag’s Chasin The Wind, JH, WCX<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 – “CHASE” earned his <\/span>WORKING RETRIEVER EXCELLENT<\/span><\/span> (WCX) <\/span><\/strong><\/span>title at the Penobscot Hunting Retriever Club’s “Firecracker Classic” test on July 20th, 2007 handled by Dave.\u00a0 Three other WASSOOKEAG Labradors earned their Working Certificate titles the same day including:
\n<\/span>Wassookeag’s Educating Archie, WC\u00a0 “Archie” –\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong>handled by Sue<\/span><\/span>

\n<\/b> Can Ch Luna’s Rising Star, JH, WC<\/span><\/strong> to the Labrador Retriever Club of Greater Boston Specialty Show in Westford, MA on June 15th.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>

We just received OFA hip and elbow results back on our 2 year old chocolate male, <\/span>Blindfaith’s Indianola Jones<\/span><\/strong> and we’re happy to report he is <\/span>OFA EXCELLENT<\/span><\/strong>, Elbows normal.\u00a0 He is also CERF’d annually and CNM clear.\u00a0 Indy has an extensive field pedigree. Hats off to<\/span> BIS Can Ch Beinnbhreaghs Aces Are Better, WC <\/span><\/strong>for going Winners Dog and Best Of Winners for another MAJOR win (4 points) at the Northshore Kennel Club Show in Topsfield, MA on June 17th handled by Sue .\u00a0\u00a0 Not bad for a boy that hasn’t been shown for a year.\u00a0 Ace went Winners Dog and Best of Winners at the same show last year for a four-point major win.\u00a0 Ace was just shown the one day in Topsfield.\u00a0 Guess I better take him out and get the last few single points he needs to finish up that AKC Championship!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We recently received the test results from OptiGen on<\/span>
\n<\/span> Can Ch Pinehaven Wassookeag Filson WC <\/span><\/strong>and are happy to report he is genetically <\/span>Normal\/Clear<\/span><\/strong> meaning he can be bred to <\/span>any<\/span><\/strong> dog and will produce <\/span>no<\/span><\/strong> pups affected with the prcd form of PRA. So far, the only inherited PRA disease known in Labradors is this prcd form of PRA.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

WASSOOKEAG <\/span><\/strong>was well represented again this year at The Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac Specialty Show in Frederick, Maryland.\u00a0 Sue brought four Labradors to this show which was the largest gathering of
\n<\/span> Labrador Retrievers in the world to date – over 1100 Labradors entered!

Both Dave & Sue traveled to Prince Edward Island, Canada for the Island Dog Club shows on October 29th and 30th.\u00a0 Saturday was especially exciting when <\/span>Wassookeag’s Smoke Jumper, WC, CGC<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span> (Smudge)<\/span><\/strong> won the Bred-By class, reserve winner’s female and Best Bred-By in Breed handled by David and <\/span>Luna’s Rising Star WC, CGC (Bertha)<\/span><\/strong> won the Open Class, Winner’s Female, Best Of Winners, BEST OF BREED over 5 specials and a Sporting Group 2nd for 5 points to finish her <\/span>Canadian Championship!!!!!<\/span><\/strong> handled by Sue.\u00a0 Dave also had the honor of handling our puppy, <\/span>Can Ch Pinehaven Wassookeag Filson, WC, CGC<\/span><\/strong> to the Best of Opposite Sex win over 4 male specials!!!\u00a0 Sue then took the lead with<\/span> Filson<\/span><\/strong> to earn Best Puppy in Breed and his third Best Puppy In Sporting Group win.\u00a0 On Saturday evening it was off the the Atlantic Puppy Awards with <\/span>Filson<\/span><\/strong> where he was invited to compete with all puppies who earned a Best Puppy in Sporting Group win in the past year from any of the three Atlantic provinces.\u00a0 This was a semi-formal affair.\u00a0 There were approximately 20 Sporting group puppies competing (6 Labradors) and <\/span>Filson<\/span><\/strong> showed like a trooper, winning a Group 4th placement.\u00a0 One of the challenges here was showing a Labrador puppy in a full-length gown – though we pulled it off without a hitch!!\u00a0 On Sunday <\/span>Smudge <\/span><\/strong>went Best Bred-By female, Reserve Winners Female and Best Bred-By in Breed again, <\/span>Bertha <\/span><\/strong>took BEST OF BREED for a second time and a 3rd in Sporting Group while <\/span>Filson <\/span><\/strong>went Best Puppy in Breed once more under Judge Jim Reynolds.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Three <\/span>Wassookeag<\/span><\/strong> Labradors traveled to Bridgewater, NJ with Sue for the Mid-Jersey Labrador Retriever Club Specialty Shows on October 20th and 21st with all coming home with ribbons!\u00a0 <\/span>Wassookeag’s Natalie WC<\/span><\/strong> won fourth in sweeps both days, <\/span>Can Ch Pinehaven Wassookeag Filson WC<\/span><\/strong> won 3rd in sweeps and 2nd in regular on Thursday and 2nd in sweeps and FIRST in regular on Friday and <\/span>Luna’s Rising Star WC, CGC\u00a0 (Bertha) <\/span><\/strong><\/span>won 4th in the large Am Bred Class on Thursday

The trip to Rhode Island for the Labrador Retriever Club, Inc, National Specialty on October 12th, 13th and 14th proved successful with <\/span>Wassookeag’s Natalie WC<\/span><\/strong> placing 2nd in sweepstakes in the 12 – 15 mos. class and fourth in regular, <\/span>Can Ch Pinehaven<\/span><\/strong> Wassookeag Filson WC<\/span><\/strong> placing third in sweeps and second in regular and <\/span><\/span>
\n<\/b> Broadway Wassookeag Showtime JH, WC, CGC (Tony)<\/span><\/strong> placing third in the Hunting Retriever Class.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Susan recently returned from <\/span>England<\/span><\/strong> where she attended the prestigious <\/span>Crufts<\/span><\/strong> dog show.\u00a0 There were many lovely Labradors and an extremely nice showing of Tollers present.\u00a0 She also had the opportunity to visit several well known Labrador kennels including <\/span>Sandylands<\/span><\/strong>, <\/span>Warringah<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>Boothgates<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 Special thanks to Marilyn and David Nightingale of Boothgates Labradors for their generous hospitality.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
